This building i found near the town centre. It made me laugh. I wonder, way back in 1880’s – 1940’2 did the ladies meet to discuss.
Maybe they bitched about their husbands always dirty from the mines, or the hard earned money lost on two up or those ‘who were better off’. I think it may have been an earlier version of our Country Women’s Association (CWA).
There is, also, another building that once was a thriving pub (hotel) which is now an independent church. called the Liberty Centre.. How funny is that? Preaching about God saving the world whilst having a beer. Come to think of it that is what most pubs are about. Being ‘saved’ ( mentally) and yarning with fellow mates.
A local tells me that out the back of the Liberty Centre ….”used to, also, be where one could get a little sexual reprieve from certain girls back in the day” nod nod wink wink.
